Mission Statement
Sunburst Strategies provides expert consultation to social sector organizations to help them learn and plan so they can advance their missions with effectiveness and joy. I founded Sunburst Strategies in 2024 after 20 years of experience providing strategy, evaluation, and organizational development consulting for several national firms. My 10 years of direct experience working in the public and nonprofit sectors, prior to my transition into consulting in 2004, provides the inspiration for my work. I have been an Executive Director, Development Director, Program Director, and board member, which means I understand the day to day challenges faced by my clients and appreciate the effort and energy it takes to engage in strategic planning or organizational strengthening work. My "why" is equity and justice. Since we live in a system that all too often puts profit ahead of people, and therefore produces inequity as a byproduct, the social sector is the greatest asset we have to improve the lives and position of those who experience the most inequitable outcomes — who in America are most often people of color (especially Black and Indigenous Americans). I was called to this vocation to use the science and practice of organizational development to strengthen the individual and collective capacity of social sector organizations to improve the lives of the people they exist to serve. Of all the various capacities that social sector organizations need to be effective in delivering on their missions, I believe that learning and planning are the ones that make the most difference in addressing inequity and injustice in our communities.
Why do you think it’s important for your business or organization to support nonprofits and community organizations in Southeast Michigan and what kind of positive impact do you think your work could have?
I started up my solo consultancy in 2024 so I could focus my work and energy in my new (as of 2021) home state of Michigan - since the national consulting firms I had been working for resulted in me having clients that were dispersed around the country, and even the world. While I am grateful to have been able to work in far-flung places, I am now dedicated to growing my relationships with my fellow Michiganders, many of whom live in Southeast Michigan. My experience working in many urban areas (for example I did a major capacity building study for a Chicago-area funders group and two strategic plans for the San Francisco Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development) makes me uniquely qualified to engage with the multiplicity and complexity of issues faced by organizations and communities in the Detroit metro area. My ability to understand the contexts that my clients are working in, build trusting relationships, and help organizations and initiatives learn about, navigate, and strengthen connections with their broader ecosystems ensures that our engagement together will produce the positive results that are desired, and probably some that were not anticipated! I will work diligently to become an indispensable part of the social sector ecosystem in Southeast Michigan.
