Mission Statement
Cities Reimagined uses a combination of data and the lived experience of residents to help leaders diagnose and solve urban problems. Cities Reimagined’s founder, Alex Johnston, started her career as a social worker. After seeing first hand how difficult it was for her clients to navigate the process of applying for food stamps, she was began asking her local government leaders who was working on making these processes less complicated. The first leader she asked said, “no one – that’s not something we do”, while the next said “if they want it bad enough they will figure it out”. The last answer she got was, “someone should really fix that”. Two weeks later, Alex quit her job as a social worker and started Cities Reimagined with the idea of placing the end user at the center of the design process. Alex believed that the person applying for food stamps should be the one designing the application, rather than jumping through hoops created by someone without lived experience. We believe that great design builds trust and gives all people access to the care they deserve.
Why do you think it’s important for your business or organization to support nonprofits and community organizations in Southeast Michigan and what kind of positive impact do you think your work could have?
Cities Reimagined is a woman owned and operated Detroit based-business. Our founder, Alex Johnston, is a City of Detroit resident and has worked with many community organizations over the years. We imagine Detroit’s future to be thoughtfully and courageously co-designed with residents to center their lived experience. Our mantra is, “we aren’t the experts on the solutions – that’s you. Our expertise is getting you where you want to go.” Our facilitation work and program design support centers this lived experience, ensuring Detroit is a community built for and by Detroiters.
