Mission Statement
As professional meeting/event/convening organizers, our purpose is to help our clients gather with purpose. We are meeting design and planning experts based in Detroit but with experience working in all 50 states, as well as internationally. What makes us unique, however, is that we literally wrote the book on convening management. Funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation we conducted a year-long research study into foundation/grantee convening best practices in the areas of meeting design, adult learning and communications. We use the summary document on a daily basis planning both virtual and live events.
Why do you think it’s important for your business or organization to support nonprofits and community organizations in Southeast Michigan and what kind of positive impact do you think your work could have?
Special D Events has nearly 30 years of experience supporting foundations and nonprofits in the Detroit area and beyond. Our clients will tell you that we become an extension of their staff, part of the family, and that we always have their best interests at heart. We ensure they gather strategically, ensure they lift up all the voices in their community, keep costs to a minimum and demonstrate return on investment to their stakeholders. But the impact we made before COVID-19 is nothing compared to the impact we must make going forward. Our team has watched the world get comfortable with Zoom meetings and virtual events, and we’re extremely concerned. Yes, we have the expertise to plan virtual meetings, but a decline of face-to-face convenings does not bode well for humanity. We see the learning, the sharing and the change that happens when a diverse group of people are gathered together in the same space for an effectively designed meeting. Without these intimate interactions, we are less likely to really get to know each other, understand each other or have meaningful dialogue. And, now more than ever, that is so important. So, in 2020 we have found ourselves reinvigorated and even more determined to help nonprofits and community organizations make an impact with their events.
