Mission Statement
Another World Planning & Design is dedicated to imagining and creating healthier, more resilient communities. Another World provides professional urban planning and design services for public, non-profit, grassroots, and private sector clients who are striving to make positive, sustainable, and equitable changes in their communities. Another World puts special focus on collaborative, neighborhood-based action led by groups that have been historically ignored, excluded, or harmed by conventional urban planning, urban design, and real estate development practices. Another World can help you with: •Early-stage visioning, brainstorming and strategic planning •Research, mapping, and analysis for neighborhoods and sites •Community engagement, outreach, and educational activities for all ages •Concept plans and designs for structures and landscapes •Graphic design and writing for public communications •Project management and coordination with other design professionals, city staff, contractors, and any other partners who are involved in implementing your project. Another World’s principal and founder is Andrew Wald, an AICP certified planner with over a decade of professional experience in urban planning, urban design, community engagement, and project management. Andrew holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan and a B.A. in history from Pomona College. Prior to becoming a designer, he taught elementary and middle school, and worked on organic farms in Japan. Andrew is a proud resident of Detroit.
Why do you think it’s important for your business or organization to support nonprofits and community organizations in Southeast Michigan and what kind of positive impact do you think your work could have?
Great public places and neighborhoods don’t just happen on their own! Whether it’s a constructing a new building, rehabbing an existing structure, or creating a new outdoor space, physical projects take a clear vision, careful planning, thoughtful design, ample investment, and a lot of hard work. In Detroit and Southeast Michigan, local nonprofits and community organizations can and do play an essential role in leading projects that transform their neighborhoods for the better. But, as anyone who’s tried it knows, even small building projects can become surprisingly complex, while big projects may require whole teams of specialized professionals that sometimes seem like they’re speaking in a foreign language. Not every organization has access to the type of professional planning and design services that they need to plan, design, and execute they physical projects they dream of for their neighborhood. Another World Planning and Design can help bridge that gap in two ways. First, Another World can directly provide organizations with accessible and high-quality planning and design services directly. Second, Another World can serve organizations as a trusted navigator and translator. In other words, Another World can guide organizations through the complex process of planning and designing physical projects from start to finish, and assist them in communicating and coordinating with any professional consultants, contractors, city departments, neighbors, and other community stakeholders who are involved in making the project a success.
